Every BaZi consultant has one: that client who you somehow just can’t seem to quite move the needle with.
You know what are the elements that work and don’t work for them, and you’ve already told them what these elements are.
But yet, their ability to tap into their Favourable Elements seems elusive. Invariably, what is happening is a situation of the Dominant and or Unfavourable Element in the wrong position.
Dominant Elements are essentially elements that are strong usually because they are supported by the Season of Birth in some way. On a rare occasion, a Dominant Element can be favourable but this is not common. Most of the time, the Dominant Element is Unfavourable or at least, not very useful to the person. It’s an element that they almost always would benefit from using less off or relying on much less in life.
Using less off or relying on it less is an important qualifier in this discussion. We’re not saying a dominant Element is a BAD STAR – all stars are usable, because all stars have both positive and negative qualities. However, when the Star is already dominant, a person is already exhibiting these traits on a magnified level, bordering on tipping into the negative. For example, if someone is strong Direct Wealth, they already have a strong sense of wealth or have a tendency to be very controlling with money. They need to REDUCE the noise from this Star, not keep on following it like the Pied Piper. If they keep following the Direct Wealth Star, they think that they are being controlling about money but in actual fact, money becomes a controlling factor in their life to the point they are unable to make actually genuinely pragmatic decisions about matters, financial AND otherwise.
But, Dominant Elements can be very difficult to ignore especially if they are in the palaces that are very close to the Day Master – for example, Month Stem or Branch (or both) and Day Branch. Think of it like the noisy neighbour who makes a lot of noise and makes it impossible for you to ignore them, even if they aren’t a very good influence on you. Eventually you start singing their tune. Day Masters are also lazy by nature – why bother to try to find an element that you should and can use when there’s a few elements nearby that seem to easy to use. Just like in the gym, people tend to work the muscles that are already strong or just the ones that everyone wants to see on IG videos.
There are exceptions of course to the rule – all rules in BaZi have exceptions. If a dominant element happens to also be a Day Master’s MVP element – think Ding Fire to a Geng Metal or Ren Water to a Xin Metal, then a Day Master’s MVP, near, strong and loud is not a bad thing. The whole rule of the dominant element tipping into negative territory is arguably somewhat negated when that element is your MVP.
Note: MVP here doesn’t mean it is necessarily your Favourable Element. MVP here refers to the element that is fundamental to every Day Master and is unique to them in terms of preferred usability, and optimal value to the DM.
But when the element in question is NOT the MVP of the DM, that’s when these elements that are near, strong and loud are not doing any favours for the person. Ignoring the noisy neighbour however is not so easy if the neighbour you should be listening to is also not very available to come and talk to the DM. This is typically the case when you have the Favourable Element hidden inside a Graveyard Earthly Branch for example (Dog/Goat/Dragon/Ox) or the Favourable Element is very far away such as in the Year Branch.
Will power and conditioning from an early age to rely on the right stars therefore is important. The older a person gets the harder it is for them to reach for the ‘right’ Stars as it were. It’s much easier to settle in and rely on the old faithful stars that you know, even if they’re probably not really that good for you.
Sometimes you can have a situation where an unfavourable element is Weak (technically a good thing) but it is positioned very close to the Day Master in a convenient location. The Day Master gets lazy and starts to lean on that element for no real reason other than, it’s near by. Now, when an element is UNFAVOURABLE and WEAK, it will almost always exhibit the negative qualities more than the positive qualities. Basically, think of it as the worst of the worse.
So if you have a client who has been going around and around, and getting nowhere with the advice you give them…
…take a look and see if they have Noisy Neighbours.
