I recently came across this book, Hagakure: The Art of the Samurai (by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, translated by Barry D Steben) in the bookstore and bought a copy. Loved it. But more importantly, I thought it was a book that really illuminated the thinking of two types of Daymasters: Gengs 庚 and to a lesser degree, Jias甲.
If you are either of these Daymasters, I recommend it highly! (and it’s available for very cheap at Borders for some strange reason). It is the epitome of how to achieve ‘Gengness’ and ‘Jianess’.
Hi Bernice, thanks for mentioning this book on your blog. I’m your student from M2 back in November last year (2009), the Jia Zi DM. I recently read JY’s Geng DM mini book. The book really highlighted my weakness associated with the lack of ‘Geng’. I was then talking to a fellow student. She then somehow pointed out this article to me. Just got the book from Borders and reading it now.
