Where is my Eating God?

July 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Typically, I’m moved to write based on whatever piques a BaZi interest in me – as evidenced by my recent ‘Hollywood -Casting by the BaZi’ series of posts.

Typically I also find ideas from looking at the searches that have brought people to my blog. It gives me an indication of the subjects that people are interested (hence, I have started to address the subject of Peach Blossom much more expansively in the BaZi Module One classes I teach at the Mastery Academy, and at a recent talk I gave on ‘Romancing the Elements’).

But I’m curious to hear more about what YOU, the readers of this blog, would like to know more about (as opposed to knowing about your own charts – not the same thing!).

So if you’ve always been curious about something related to BaZi, send me a mail (bazibuzz@gmail.com) with your question, and if it’s interesting, I’ll write a post about it. Subject matter questions only please.

Hollywood – Casting by the BaZi? (Part One)

July 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

After all the serious topics of the past, I thought I’d just go with something frivolous for a change.

I often encourage students of BaZi to use the lives of the rich and famous to study and learn BaZi – the lives of pop stars, actors, actresses and politicians being more public than the average person, it is an ideal opportunity to observe the co-relation between BaZi and events in a person’s life.

I’ve found it interesting to compare the roles that actors/actresses undertake, to their BaZi. Now, actors (I use the gender neutral version here) are often fearful of being type-cast or pigeon-holed into the same type of part. Versatility is an important skill for an actor, both from a career advancement standpoint, and of course, a creative fulfillment standpoint. And in theory, being actors, they are supposed to have a chameleonic quality and be able to play any part equally well.

However, I have found some examples of where an actor succeeds particularly well in a part or becomes notable/famous as a result of a part, and it so happens that the role links into their BaZi. This of course prompted me to consider if Hollywood casting directors are guided in their choices by the invisible hand of BaZi. That or most actresses cannot really escape their true selves (as revealed their BaZi) and so when they are ‘acting’ a part, they are really just being themselves. And I am not for a minute suggesting there is no genuine acting involved – but it is certainly easier to act a role that you are somewhat familiar with (or cosmically destined to play) than it is to play one that you’re inherently unfamiliar with right?

So here are a few examples of my theory of Casting by the BaZi.

Glenn Close – Devilish Casting?

Glenn Closer in Damages

Glenn Close in Damages

Amongst Glenn Close’s most famous parts include epitomising the femme fatale in Fatal Attraction, bringing to life Cruella DeVil, and playing the consummate scheming dirty lawyer in Damages. Indeed, many of her famous parts epitomise the Chinese character trait known as ‘Kan’ in Cantonese. ‘Kan’ does not have an English equivalent – it is not used to denote evil (since it is not exclusively associated with being a bad person) but is more a combination of scheming and cunning. It can be used negatively but can also be used in a context of admiration of Machiavellian scheming abilities.

Now, in BaZi, this attribute can be said to be represented by the Rooster and the Rabbit Branches. This is of course one of the Six Clashes but broadly speaking, the presence of both these Branches in a chart tends to be seen as the signal that a person is capable of being a plotter, a schemer, cunning and deceptive. This is because Rooster (Xin) and Rabbit (Mao) each contain the two stems which are seen as being most representative of cunning, plotting, scheming, calculating and survivalist attributes and qualities. In addition, both these Branches are also Peach Blossom Stars, which indicate the ability to make use of sex appeal or sexualise their deceit or deception or schemes. This is not to say a person with the Rabbit and Rooster Branches is evil, or bad, or someone to disassociate with. Rather, it suggests that the person has a edgy side to them, a certain cunning, that cannot be and should not be under-estimated.

This is Glenn Close’s BaZi chart (time not correct)

I have circled the Rooster-Rabbit in her chart. Now, to my mind, this Rooster-Rabbit explains Close’s ability to play the part of the bunny-boiling mistress in Fatal Attraction so well. In a sense, it could be said she’s not really acting, but drawing on an innate understanding of the character. In her own chart, there is a Rooster-Rabbit clash, signifying at least one experience of betrayal in her life, and one that relates to love or romance, since the two stars are Peach Blossom Stars. As the Rabbit and Rooster are stars that signify cunning and the ability to be deceitful, hence her ability to play a femme fatale who carefully plots her vengeance on her lover. As the two stars contain Xin and Yi, the two stars that are most conscious of ‘face’, hence also her ability to convincingly portray a woman who upon being scorned, is intent on wrecking vengeance in the most nasty way possible. Mao also represents the Direct Resource star in her chart, which is also the star of comfort, and face value and how a person is perceived by others. Xin and Mao, as a visual image, suggests slowly cutting, slicing and dicing away at something. Hence, in Fatal Attraction, her character torments Michael Douglas in her vengeance.

In Damages, Close plays a Patty Hewes, a lawyer who will stop at nothing to achieve her goals in a lawsuit. Again, that ruthlessness and willingness to do anything it takes could be drawing upon the Rooster-Rabbit in her chart. The character of Patty Hewes in Damages plots and schemes – Xin and Mao in action. She is patient, proceeding a step at a time and inflicting small blows with each plot – again, Xin and Mao in action. Finally, the character of Patty Hewes is very true to Close’s own Day Master, which is Ding. Ding Fire people are best at illuminating, leading a chart, rising to a great challenge. Fire can be big or it can be small and in the show, Patty is able to retreat and go on the offensive, at the blink of an eye. Patty tries to act like a mentor to the character of Rose Byrne (a very Ding thing to do), but at the same time, we know Patty is capable of great rage, and great calm. Again, the very attributes of Ding Fire, which can be a raging rampaging Fire, or a calm illuminating and warming flame that lights the darkness. Fire can transform and change, it can warm or it can burn. And these are in a sense, the attributes that Patty Hewes epitomises, and characteristics which Glenn Close portrays immensely convincingly. Perhaps because they are simply attributes which she already has inherent in her?

You Give Peach Blossom a Bad Name

July 10, 2008 · 3 Comments

The WordPress Dashboard has a very fun useful little feature – amongst the stats, it shows me what people were searching for, when they arrived at this blog. Here are the searches done for July 10 2008:

Interestingly, there are two questions that relate to Peach Blossom. AGAIN.

And today, in a ‘Power of BaZi’ session, where I was introducing the subject of BaZi, once again, Peach Blossom cropped up. So I figure, hint from the universe. Time to talk Peach Blossom again. I say again because this subject actually seems to endlessly fascinate people (despite the fact that in the grand scale of all things BaZi, it really isn’t THAT big a deal). See my previous blog entry on the subject here.

Observations on Peach Blossom Stars

One: women get worked up over Peach Blossom Stars in their spouse or boyfriend’s chart.

Two: women never ask if THEY have a Peach Blossom Star, nor do they seem particularly concerned that they have a Peach Blossom star in their own chart.

Three: men don’t seem to be interested in Peach Blossom Stars, nor do they inquire about such stars in their wife’s chart.

Somewhere out there, some old wives tale has perpetuated about Peach Blossom Stars and that Peach Blossom Stars = Infidelity. Funny now the old wives tale only relates to infidelity and MEN, not infidelity and women. After all, what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander right? So if a man has Peach Blossom Stars, and the conclusion is he will cheat, the same can be applied to a woman who has Peach Blossom Stars as well surely?

Ladies, GET OVER it with the Peach Blossom.

Cheating is not the exclusive purview of the Peach Blossom Star although it is something to consider.

For that matter, if he didn’t have a Peach Blossom Star, YOU wouldn’t have given him a second look in the first place.

“What is Peach Blossom” and “Peach + Blossom”

Obviously, the second search is just an attempt to see what happens when the equation is put in that way, as perhaps the searching party wasn’t sure if there was such a word in the English vocabulary. For those who are curious, the Chinese name is ‘tou fa’ (Cantonese) or ‘Tou Hua’ (mandarin). The BaZi language speaking will abbreviate it to ‘PB’.

The question “What is Peach Blossom” is simple enough to answer. In BaZi, it is a type of Star and is derived from the Shen Sha method of interpreting BaZi. It is not part of the more modern ‘Zi Ping’ method. Peach Blossom is a star of attraction and likability. It makes people likable, pleasant, nice to be with, amiable, and sometimes, attractive.  It does indicate sex appeal sometimes (although that in my view is more likely to be caused by a Seven Killings star) but it also depends on what Ten Gods component the Peach Blossom star is. That’s kicking the answer to the question up a notch.

Peach Blossom is not an infidelity star, or a firm indication that a person will cheat, or have many girlfriends (although if one is attractive, it surely is necessarily likely that one will also have many admirers/torchbearers no?).

Compatibility Analysis in Action

July 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

This is part two of an article that was originally published in March 2008 on my blog, entitled ‘This Thing Called Compatibility‘.

Here’s the question which came into the Bazi Buzz email (which I’ve kept the asker waiting on tetherhooks for ages). It is as follows:

Can you tell me something about compatibility analysis using BaZi? Have just come off a relationship with someone, and also seeing someone else…which guy to chose? Can BaZi help me in this??!!! I don’t want to make a mistake again but how do I know if this guy is right or maybe the ex is a better choice? Ex – DOB: 7/5/1974 – current – DOB 9/10/1975 me – DOB – 4/6/1976.

Here is the lady in question’s BaZi (time not included – strictly speaking that is important but we are going to analyse compatibility from a basic standpoint here).

As we can see from the chart, she is a Ding Fire Day master.  Now, although the objective of the exercise is to evaluate her compatibility with two people – her ex-boyfriend and current boyfriend, first we need to consider her chart. This is because we want to make sure that her chart doesn’t show any existing relationship issues such as a missing spouse star for example. Now in this case, the spouse star or Direct Officer star (represented by Ren Water) is in the Spouse Palace. The Spouse Palace is the Earthly Branch that is directly under the Day Master – in this case, it is the Pig. Unfortunately, this Spouse Star also has a clash, from the Snake in the month. So, we need to take into account this factor when considering this lady’s overall relationship track record.

Now, when we look at compatibility, timing is also essential. If the person is not in the right Luck Pillar for forming a long-term relationship or marriage, then of course, she’s not going to meet Mr Right. (and vice versa if it’s a man). To which the issue of compatibility in my opinion wouldn’t even arise!
So let’s look at her Luck Pillars:

She’s 32 years old this year, so we will be looking at the 30-40 Luck Pillar. Here it is up close and personal:

Now, first off, this is not a ‘marriage’ Luck Pillar as it were – the Luck Pillar of Geng Yin in this case is more suited towards professional and career progression and advancement rather than marriage. Also, because the Wood star is involved, in this particular case, the reason why this lady may have landed herself in these two relationships is likely due to simply ‘gliding’ into a relationship rather than actually consciously choosing to have a relationship. In other words, she has drifted into the situation. Now, as her question does not stipulate WHEN she met the two gentlemen, we can only speculate. But certainly from the chart, meeting a guy in 2007 is highly likely, and Man #2 having come along in 2008 is highly possible – in both these years, there are spouse star elements. In 2007 it is the Ren in the Pig, and in 2008, it is the Gui in the Rat.

The only problem is this is 2007 is wrong year to meet a man and the relationship did not last and rightly so. And 2008, whilst it is not a bad year to meet someone, it is still a Peach Blossom year, which warrants being a little bit more careful before hopping into a serious relationship or marriage. Especially given that she’s not in the right Luck Pillar for a long-term relationship or marriage.

Now logically, we need not even go into the Compatibility issue because in the first place, these two relationships are untimely and meant to be transient in nature. They aren’t meant to last long. It’s also important to note that the Tiger forms a Combination-Destruction with the Spouse Palace, suggesting relationships that start out well, but then gradually erode.

But what if…what if?

Hypothetically, we can still of course look at the Compatibility between this lady and her two possible candidates: Mr Now, and Mr Ex.

Here’s Mr Now’s BaZi:

And here are his Luck Pillars:

As Mr Now would be 33 years old, we are looking at the 30-40 Luck pillar of Ren Wu.

And here is the BaZi of Mr Ex:

And here are his Luck Pillars:

As Mr Ex is born in 1974, he would be 34 years old and so we would also be looking at the 30-40 Luck pillar of Ren Shen.

Now, both Mr Now and Mr Ex are Wu Earth Day Masters. Sometimes, one might look at the Day Masters to see if there is any connection there that suggests compatibility but that is just one of the things that we will look at. And that is not just specifically applicable to ‘romance’ related compatibility but any general compatibility. We tend to gravitate towards people who are similar Day Masters, or with whom our Day Master combines with. For example, Geng people may find they gravitate towards Yi Wood Day Masters as Geng and Yi are a combination.

Now, between Mr Ex and Mr Now, it is a tough toss up. Tough in the sense that both men are going through a conducive Luck Pillar for marriage or a long-term relationship. In both their Luck Pillars, the spouse star is present.

However, on evaluation of Luck Pillars, Mr Ex’s Luck Pillar is more favourable for marriage for two reasons: firstly, Mr Ex’s Luck Pillar is Ren Shen, where in the spouse star is rooted in both Stem and Branch. Thus, this is a purer Spouse star and thus, is suggestive of ‘real’ marriage luck. By contrast, Mr Now’s Luck Pillar is Ren Wu – the spouse star is only present on the surface. Furthermore, the Wu clashes with the Zi in Mr Now’s spouse palace. So double reason why Mr Now is not a very good contention candidate. By contrast, Mr Ex’s Luck Pillar don’t reveal any clash with the Spouse Palace, which is Shen.

But whilst the timing is right, we also have to match the inherent BaZis of both men. Now, Mr Now’s chart would be classified as a cold chart, as he is born in the month of Xu, which is very close to the winter season, marked by the Hai month. By contrast, Mr Ex’s chart would be classified as a warm chart, as he is born in the month of Si, which is the start of the Summer season.

The lady in question has a very hot chart, being herself a Ding Fire Day Master, and born in the Snake month, which is again, the start of the summer season. No time is given but if she is born in the day, then the chart is definitely hot.

So, her preference would certainly be towards the person with the cooler chart. That suggests Mr Now’s chart. But, the lady in question’s chart favours both Metal and Water and although Mr Ex’s chart is hot, the Snake and Monkey is a combination that produces water and there is strong Metal in his chart, as the Snake is the growth of the Metal element.

In this case, Mr Ex would seem to be the better option for a long-term or more serious relationship for the following reasons:

-    Mr Ex’s Luck Pillars show he is in the right timing for marriage – this is important to help foster a positive outcome to the relationship
-    Although Mr Ex’s chart is warm and does not have strong water, his chart does have quite a bit of Metal, which is one of the elements the lady in question likes. This suggests the foundation of a good relationship as well as if the spouse’s chart contains elements the other person likes, they are more likely to stay together, or accommodate each other (yes, so when you’re annoyed with your spouse, it could just be them elements talking)
-    Finally, Mr Now is hardly going through a great patch in 2008, and the clash between his spouse palace and his Luck Pillars basically indicates marriage is certainly not a good idea and a relationship is unlikely to last long.

So between Mr Ex and Mr Now, Mr Ex is looking like a better option. BUT, the goal of a consultant is to evaluate the charts objectively. That means, we don’t take into account emotions, or how you feel and what you like. That’s what it was like in the old days in China – you met your spouse on your wedding day.

That is not of course, practical given the modern circumstances of relationships. Which is why, any Compatibility Analysis should always be done with an understanding that sometimes, feelings matter more than those elements. Someone can appreciate objectively that the person they love is all wrong for them (many people realise this without BaZi’s help) but well, that’s love for you.

Ultimately of course, should the lady in question actually be in a consult, neither gentlemen would be the choice, for the simple reason that her Luck Pillars are not indicative of marriage or relationship luck. But sometimes clients are insistent! Which to some degree goes against the whole idea of checking in the first place! If the timing is not right, why force it?
